Kids, consent, and household fit

Shibas are not unsafe dogs. They are dogs who need consent, space, and calm handling. A home with kids can work well when adults create structure and protect the dog’s boundaries.

The biggest risk factor

The risk is not children. The risk is unmanaged contact and adults who miss the early signals.

House rules that protect everyone

  • No hugging. No face-to-face pressure.
  • Let the dog approach. Do not chase.
  • Hands off when the dog is eating, resting, or in a safe retreat.
  • Adults supervise. Always.

Build safe retreats

Every Shiba should have a place they can go where no one follows. That is not a punishment spot. It is a regulation spot.

Teach the child the skill

The skill is consent. Ask. Pause. Accept no.
