Haru is a handsome black and tan male Shiba Inu with a gentle, low-key personality and a soft heart that is already starting to show.

Born June 1, 2022, Haru is neutered, microchipped, and weighs approximately 31.4 pounds. He arrived at Shiba Saviors with Kuro and Mei after the three dogs were surrendered from the same former breeder home.

Haru is not yet available for adoption, but he will be soon. Right now, we are helping him settle in, gain confidence, and learn that new places, new people, and normal life experiences can be safe.

Like the other two dogs from this home, Haru is timid. The difference is that Haru is a little quicker to trust and a little quicker to seek affection once he realizes someone is kind.

He is gentle, treat-motivated, and sweet. He walks beautifully on leash, but loud noises or uncertain situations can still cause him to pancake and shut down for a moment.

Haru needs a calm, gentle home that will continue helping him build confidence without overwhelming him.

Personality

Haru is a very gentle dog.

He is timid and cautious at first, but he is also quicker than the other two dogs from his group to trust and show affection. Once he realizes that a person is safe, he begins to soften and engage.

He is low-key, sweet, and not pushy. He does not need a loud or chaotic home. He needs calm people, soft handling, and the chance to come out of his shell at his own pace.

Haru loves treats, which makes him easier to encourage and guide through new experiences.

Training and Behavior

Haru walks great on a leash and is generally easy to handle outside when the environment is calm.

However, loud noises, sudden changes, or uncertain situations can scare him. When he becomes overwhelmed, he may pancake and stop moving while he processes what is happening around him.

This is fear, not stubbornness.

Haru is also exit-seeking, which means doors, gates, car doors, and leash transitions must be managed carefully.

He will need continued positive exposure, confidence building, and patient encouragement as he learns that the world is safe.

Background

Haru arrived with Kuro and Mei from the same former breeder home.

We believe Haru may have been bred with Mei, the red female who arrived with him. Because of his background, he is still learning normal household expectations, independence, and safe exposure to everyday life.

He had a few skin hotspots on arrival that we are currently treating.

Other Dogs

Haru arrived as part of a bonded group of three dogs.

The three take comfort in one another, but we are already working on separate crating, separate walks, and helping each dog gain more independence.

Haru may do well with another calm, stable dog in the home, but he also needs humans who will help him build confidence as an individual.

Children and Activity Level

Haru needs a gentle home.

Younger children, toddlers, or loud and highly active children would likely scare him. He is not a dog who will thrive in a chaotic environment with sudden grabbing, running, yelling, or unpredictable movement.

He may be appropriate for a quieter home with older, respectful children who understand how to give a timid dog space, but his best fit will be a calm household that can keep life predictable while he builds confidence.

Daily Life With Haru

Haru is soft, observant, and sweet. He is not a high-drama dog. He is not looking for chaos or constant activity.

He wants safety, routine, kindness, and gentle encouragement.

With treats, patience, and calm handling, Haru is already showing that he wants to connect. He just needs someone who will not rush him.

Home Environment

Haru would likely do best in:

  • A calm, gentle home
  • People familiar with shy, timid, or under-socialized dogs
  • A household without toddlers or loud, highly active children
  • People committed to positive reinforcement and slow exposure
  • A secure home with careful leash, door, and gate management
  • A family that will use treats, patience, and encouragement to build trust

Safety Requirements

Haru is a flight risk and is also exit-seeking.

He must be securely leashed outside unless he is inside a well-secured area. A properly fitted harness, secure leash handling, and careful door and gate management are required.

He should not be left outside unsupervised, even in a fenced yard.

  • No off-leash time outside of a securely fenced area
  • No unsupervised yard time
  • No loose leash handling near roads, doors, gates, or unfamiliar environments
  • No dog doors
  • No relying on recall as a safety plan

Haru will need adopters who take Shiba safety seriously and understand that fear can make even a gentle dog move quickly.

The Right Home for Haru

Haru does not need pressure. He needs safety.

He needs a home that will understand his fear without defining him by it.

He is gentle, affectionate once he trusts, low-key, and very capable of becoming a deeply loved companion in the right environment.

For someone willing to move slowly, use kindness, and celebrate each little step forward, Haru has so much sweetness to give.
